Electrotherapy In Ankeny, IA

A Treatment Tool to Support Your Recovery

When you’re dealing with an injury, pain, or difficulty moving, sometimes you need more than exercise alone to get started.

Electrotherapy uses controlled electrical stimulation to target specific nerves or muscles. Depending on the type of stimulation and your individual needs, it may be used to help manage symptoms, activate muscles, or support your rehabilitation.

At Stewart Sport & Spine PT, electrotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. We use it when we believe it can provide value as part of your overall plan.

The goal isn’t to keep you hooked up to a machine. The goal is to help you move forward.

What Is Electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy is a general term for treatments that use controlled electrical stimulation for therapeutic purposes.

Different types of electrical stimulation can be used for different goals. Your physical therapist will determine what type, intensity, and duration are appropriate based on your condition and what you’re trying to accomplish.

Depending on your situation, electrotherapy may be used alongside:

  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Strength training
  • Mobility work
  • Manual therapy
  • Movement retraining
  • Other rehabilitation techniques

How Can Electrotherapy Help?

Electrotherapy may be used as part of rehabilitation to help:

  • Manage certain types of pain
  • Stimulate muscles that are difficult to activate
  • Support muscle strengthening
  • Improve muscle activation after injury or surgery
  • Make exercise or movement more comfortable
  • Complement other parts of your rehabilitation program

Its effectiveness depends on the individual and the specific problem being treated.

That’s why we don’t automatically use electrotherapy just because you have pain.

We first determine what is causing your problem and whether electrical stimulation is likely to help.

What Does Electrotherapy Feel Like?

The sensation depends on the type of electrical stimulation being used and the goal of treatment.

You may feel a tingling, pulsing, or contracting sensation in the area being treated.

Your therapist will adjust the settings based on your treatment goals and comfort level. The treatment should be controlled and tolerable—not something you simply have to endure.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

Before using electrotherapy, your physical therapist will evaluate your condition and explain why we’re considering it.

Electrodes are placed on specific areas of your body, and the appropriate stimulation is applied.

Depending on your needs, you may remain still during the treatment or perform exercises while the stimulation is being used.

Most importantly, we connect the treatment to your larger rehabilitation plan.

If electrotherapy helps you activate a muscle, tolerate an exercise, or make progress toward your goals, it can be a useful tool.

Is Electrotherapy Right for You?

Electrotherapy isn’t appropriate for everyone, and it isn’t necessary for every injury.

At Stewart Sport & Spine PT, we believe you should understand why you’re receiving a treatment—not just be told to trust the process.

We’ll evaluate your individual situation, explain what we find, and help you understand your options.

If electrotherapy makes sense, we’ll explain how it fits into your plan. If something else would be more appropriate, we’ll tell you that too.

The Goal Is Getting You Back to What You Love

Whether you’re trying to return to running, lifting, golfing, pickleball, work, exercise, or simply moving comfortably again, every part of your rehabilitation should have a purpose.

Electrotherapy is a tool. Your recovery is the goal.

At Stewart Sport & Spine PT, we’ll help you understand what’s happening, create a clear plan, and guide you toward the best path forward.

Finally understand WHY you hurt and leave with a clear plan for getting back to the life you love.

“Dr Stewart is amazing! I have experienced pain for over 5 years and have tried acupuncture, massages, other forms of physical therapy, several injections, needling, and have gone to countless specialists. Working with Dr Stewart has helped me gain mobility back and I finally have relief in dealing with sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Josh is very personable, listens, and has been awesome to work with!”

“I was experiencing debilitating nerve pain in my hands and arms. I was miserable and was trying to figure out what was wrong without going to a typical doctor. I sought out Dr. Stewart as a recommendation and thought I’d try the route of physical therapy. Turns out, the nerve pain I was feeling was due to stress from life and occupation. Dr. Stewart diagnosed the issue right away and then we got to work focused on how to reduce stress to alleviate and eradicate the symptoms I was experiencing. Dr. Stewart offers a patient first approach and truly wants to get down to the problem, provide therapy, and get us better without having to keep coming back for treatments if they aren’t necessary. I didn’t think physical therapy could help aid in stress management but I’ve learned how to reduce symptoms should they occur and provided me with a plan to continue to work on independently. He also made sure I was 100% better before discharging me. My nerve symptoms went from 75% of the day, painful, to about 10% of the day and I don’t really realize it’s happening. When it does, I engage in the stress management I learned though the sessions. I couldn’t recommend Dr. Stewart any more for any physical therapeutic needs!”
