Laser Therapy In Ankeny, IA

When Pain Is Getting in the Way of Moving Forward

Sometimes an injury or irritated area makes it difficult to move, exercise, or participate in the activities you enjoy.

Laser therapy is one tool we may use to help manage symptoms and support your rehabilitation when it makes sense for your specific situation.

But the laser isn’t the treatment plan.

Your recovery is.

At Stewart Sport & Spine PT, we look at the whole picture first. We want to understand what’s causing your problem, what is limiting you, and what you need to get back to doing.
If laser therapy can play a useful role, we’ll explain why.

What Is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy, sometimes called photobiomodulation therapy, uses specific wavelengths of light delivered to an area of the body.

The light is applied to targeted tissues using a specialized device. Depending on the condition being treated, laser therapy may be used as part of a broader plan to help manage pain and support the body’s recovery processes.

You won’t feel the laser cutting or burning your skin.

Treatment is non-invasive and typically takes only a short amount of time.

Why Might We Use Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy may be considered when symptoms are making it harder for you to move or participate in your rehabilitation.

Depending on your situation, it may be used to:

  • Help manage certain types of pain
  • Reduce discomfort that is limiting movement
  • Support your ability to participate in exercise
  • Complement other rehabilitation techniques
  • Help you progress toward your activity goals

The response to laser therapy varies depending on the person and the condition being treated.

We don’t use it because we believe every problem needs a laser. We use it when we believe it may be useful for you.

What Does a Laser Therapy Session Feel Like?

Laser therapy is generally comfortable.

You may feel little or nothing during treatment, although some devices can produce a mild warming sensation.

Your therapist will position the device over the appropriate area and select the treatment settings based on your condition and goals.

Because the treatment is non-invasive, there are no needles or incisions involved.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

Your physical therapist will first evaluate your symptoms, movement, and overall situation.

If laser therapy is appropriate, we’ll explain what we’re using it for and how it fits into your rehabilitation plan.

A typical session may involve applying the laser to specific areas while you remain still or, depending on your treatment plan, combining it with movement or exercise.

After treatment, the focus remains on progress.

That may mean strengthening, improving mobility, changing how you move, or gradually returning to the activities you want to do.

Laser Therapy Isn’t a Standalone Fix

We don’t believe that a machine should replace good rehabilitation.

If you’re dealing with an injury, we want you to understand what’s happening and have a plan for addressing it—not simply receive a treatment and hope the problem goes away.

Laser therapy may be one piece of that plan.

Your rehabilitation may also include:

  • Exercise and strengthening
  • Mobility work
  • Movement retraining
  • Education
  • Manual therapy
  • Gradual return to your activities

Every treatment should have a reason behind it.

Is Laser Therapy Right for You?

Maybe. And you don’t have to figure that out on your own.

At Stewart Sport & Spine PT, we start with an evaluation rather than assuming a particular treatment is the answer.

We’ll help you understand:

What’s causing your problem?
What can you do about it?
What needs time to heal?
What should you be doing now?
And what’s the best path to get you where you want to go?

If laser therapy is appropriate, we’ll tell you how it may help.
If another treatment—or another healthcare provider—is a better fit, we’ll tell you that too.

The Goal Is Bigger Than Feeling Better Today

Maybe you want to get back to running.

Maybe it’s lifting weights, playing golf or pickleball, getting back to work, exercising, or simply being able to move without constantly thinking about your symptoms.

Whatever your goal, treatment should help you move toward it.

Finally understand WHY you hurt and leave with a clear plan for getting back to the life you love.

When you don’t know what’s wrong or what to do next, Stewart Sport & Spine PT will give you honest answers, explain what’s happening, and guide you toward the best path forward.

“After much frustration with doctors and therapists that did not know what they were dealing with and just writing the situation off. I decided to wait for my osteoporosis appointment to discuss with him. This doctor was concerned that I may have fractured my SI joint and ordered an MRI. FINALLY. As I was waiting for the results to be had – a friend spotted Steward Sport & Spine Physical Therapy on Facebook and shared with me. After opening the website, it didn’t take long to see myself in every word Dr. Josh had spoken. I quickly booked an appointment. The best thing I did for myself. After following Dr. Josh’s direction on a program of daily exercises. I now can get in and out of my vehicle, drive some distance without pain. Not to mention stand, sit, and climb the staircase without pain. Must say that I can go days NOW without pain. However, if I find myself feeling the slightest bit sore, I know exactly what to do and how. Doctor Josh has been a godsend. I cannot talk more highly of him and have recommended his practice and services to many!”
